In the beginning of 2024, I had been studying Japanese folklore and found Yōkai to be both interesting and fun to draw.
I challenged myself with an ambitious project to showcase my own Yōkai creations. This turned into 6 illustrative pieces, which then turned into another 6 pyrogravure (wood-burning) pieces, totaling 12 all together.
Once I completed the painted illustrations, I photo-transferred the original rough draft drawings onto the wood.
After scraping off the glue and extra paper, I used the drawing as an outline for the pyrogravured picture.
Taking inspiration from Kintsugi, I added gold leaf & powder in some of the cracks to add another element into the wood.
The comedic scenes depicted are a mixture of my experience working in the club industry and inspiration from the illustrative book of Yokai.
